Equality & Diversity in Action

Through the governments Disability Confident campaign, the organisation is working to remove barriers, increase understanding and ensure that disabled people have the opportunities to fulfil their potential and realise their aspirations. In summary this means we:

  1. Interview all disabled applicants who meet the minimum requirements for a job vacancy and consider them on their abilities
  2. Ensure there is a mechanism in place to discuss, at any time, but at least once a year, with disabled employees what can be done to make sure they can develop and use their abilities
  3. To make every effort when employees become disabled to make sure they stay in employment
  4. To take action to ensure that all employees develop the appropriate level of disability awareness needed to make these commitments work
  5. To annually review the five commitments and what has been achieved, plan ways to improve on them and let employees and Jobcentre Plus know about progress and future plans

Central Education & Training is committed to a policy of providing equality of opportunity within our community. Equality and Diversity are placed at the heart of our policies and procedures and are considered as part of the decision-making process.

There are 3 year objectives which focus on the most important equality issues facing the organisation today, and those that will have the greatest impact on learners, staff and external stakeholders.

  1. To support members of the organisation community to ensure they feel comfortable, particularly those learners with a disability and members of the LGBT community, by developing awareness and understanding of all community members.
  2. To develop and review new approaches to staff and learners recruitment to ensure any barriers to individual progression are removed.
  3. To promote learner and staff awareness of different cultures and international diversity.
  4. To ensure attainment gaps for all ‘protected groups’ are minimised.

These objectives are addressed through the annual action plan of the organisation Equality and Diversity Committee

The following policies are reviewed on an annual basis and ensure that Equality and Diversity are placed at the heart of all that CET does.

 Equality and Diversity Policy

Central Education & Training respects and values the social and cultural diversity of its learners and employees by seeking to ensure that all have the opportunity to participate fully and achieve their potential irrespective of any of the following Equality Act 2010 ‘protected characteristics’.

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and Civil Partnership
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

In achieving this objective, the organisation is committed to promoting the three aims of the Public Sector Duty and has in the performance of its corporate responsibilities due regard to the need to;

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation and any other conduct prohibited by the Equality Act 2010
  • Advance Equality of Opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it; and
  • Foster good relations between people who share a ‘protected characteristic’ and people who do not share it.

The organisation achieves the aims of the Public Sector Duty by:

  • Providing a learning and work environment which is inclusive
  • Ensuring all policies, procedures and the design and delivery of the organisation services are free from discrimination and are appropriately monitored to respond to the diverse needs of all learners, employees and the wider community
  • Promoting awareness of each of the Equality Act ‘protected characteristics’
  • Investigating any staff and learner concerns
  • Promoting a culture within the organisation that promotes ‘positive’ behaviours by staff and learners
