A full-time, one year vocational development course for individuals who want to work with children from birth to five years of age, whilst providing additional knowledge of children aged 5 to 7 years. The course will prepare individuals to progress to the Level 3 Early Years Educator course (i.e. Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education), the achievement of which will enable the practitioner to gain “Early Years Educator” status within the childcare profession. The course is ideal for anyone interested in a career in childcare, whether already employed in the sector, or for those looking to enter the profession.

The following units are taught:
Child development from conception to seven years
Children’s health and well-being
Providing safe environments for children
Child health
Play and Learning
Understanding children’s additional needs
Observation, assessment and planning
Professional Practice Portfolio 1

Prospective learners must:
Be aged 16 or above, and meet eligibility criteria to access funding, unless self-funding (see Fees section below). Eligibility is normally 3 years residency in the UK, EU or EEA.
Have achieved a Childcare/Early Years nationally recognised qualification at Level 2 (e.g. EYCE, CCLD, CYPW, NVQ Level 2)
Undertake an initial assessment and interview with the Tutor to establish suitability.
Have access to a “Real Working Environment” throughout the duration of the course, to enable them to show competence in both knowledge and skills. This means that learners must have a confirmed work placement (or be in suitable childcare related employment) at the time of enrolment, and be able to access the necessary opportunities and placement hours (see Other Information section, below)

Learners will be assessed continuously throughout the course by one or more qualified Early Years qualified Assessors, to evaluate skills competency and subject knowledge. Assessment will be via a variety of methods, including through written assignments and observation in placement. All units are graded (from D up to A*).
All 8 units, plus the Effective Practice Study Task, must be passed in order to achieve the full Level 3 Certificate in Childcare and Education qualification. Certificates of unit credit will be provided where the full qualification has not been achieved, for all units completed successfully.
